What Happens When You Don’t Rest? Science Says You’re Broken AF

Skipping rest isn’t cool or something to brag about. It’s a one-way ticket to burnout, brain fog, and poor decisions. Here’s the science behind why rest is literally medicine.

Okay, let’s start this off with a hard truth: bragging about only sleeping four hours a night is not cool. It’s like licking rocks in preschool; everyone knows you’re disturbed. We live in a society that praises busyness so much that we’ve started to view rest as some sort of four-letter word. But not here. Not on Vacays. Vacation is self-care. It’s your mental health day. And what happens when you neglect your rest? Science. Has. Facts. Let’s take a look.

Your brain on no rest is a car running on fumes with the check engine light on for days. The science behind this all is loud, clear and frankly a little terrifying.

According to the CDC, over 1 in 3 adults in America are not sleeping enough. This isn't an adorable stat — this is your body begging for you to stop depriving it of its basic needs. Without proper rest your cortisol levels rise (aka your body releases stress hormones), your immune system lowers its defenses, and your prefrontal cortex — aka the part of your brain that makes decisions — starts shutting down before your eyes even do.

Research published in Nature revealed that lack of sleep speeds up production of beta-amyloid protein plaque in our brains, which build up and are what cause Alzheimer disease. Yes, when you sleep deprive yourself to “get more stuff done” you are aging your brain.

As if all of that isn't bad enough, skipping out on consecutive days of rest also wreaks havoc on your emotional stability. Researchers at UC Berkeley found that when we don't sleep, our brains respond 60% more strongly to negative emotional stimuli. Skip rest one too many times, and you're one sleep-deprived commute from rage-sobbing at a red light over a spilled coffee in the cupholder.

And sorry budgeters, but skipping vacations is a crime in itself. Finnish researchers analyzed the health of 1,222 executives for 40 years and found that men who took fewer vacations were at higher risk of death from cardiovascular disease. Your PTO could literally be saving your life.

At Vacays, we didn’t just ‘sleep on it’ and realize vacation = mental healthcare… we centered our entire brand around it because science (and exhaustion, let’s be real) told us to.

By ‘rest’, we don’t mean sleep. We mean the view outside your window that you watch without silencing your phone. We mean that one beach you go to where you have zero service and your body isn’t like... dying? It’s thriving. True rest heals you, and according to the American Psychological Association, vacation allows you to “experience less stress and better mood…” in a way that a jade roller and Postmates bookmark will not.

Yet here’s the sad part: most Americans aren’t taking vacation days. US workers left an average of about 6-7 unused vacation days per person in 2025 (out of the total average of 10-15 PTO days, after one year of employment).

That’s not capitalism. That’s human beings refusing to LIVE and we’re here to tell you that not-okay.

Vacays was made to grab you by your bootstraps (for your own good, wink wink) and say: “You know that trip you’ve been planning? BOOK IT. That sunset you’ve been waiting around to see? GO. Unplug, for the love of sanity. Unplug.” Rest isn’t something you earn. Rest is you investing in yourself. Investing in your sanity. Investing in maintaining your very best human self.

That’s what Vacays does. We hype you up. We give you the reminders when you need them. And most of all, we’re here to remind you that science wins. Rest is just plain good for you.

Bottom line? Rest isn’t laziness — it’s peak-performance strategy your entire strategy sheet. Your brain requires it. Your heart requires it. Your coworkers who suffer from Irritable Fatigue You need you to rest. At Vacays, we want you to take that vacation you’ve been stressing about. You deserve it. It’s medicine. A form of preventative mental healthcare, if you will. So put down your laptop, book your flight, and heck — sleep. Science demands it.
